DOT SAP Process 

Step 1: Complete Your Initial SAP Evaluation

The process begins with an initial evaluation conducted by a DOT Qualified Substance Abuse Professional. The SAP evaluates the circumstances of the DOT violation and determines the appropriate education and/or treatment recommendation.

Step 2: Complete the SAP Recommendation 

After the initial evaluation, you must successfully complete the education and/or treatment recommended by the SAP. The recommendation is individualized based on the SAP's professional evaluation and applicable DOT requirements. 

Step 3: Complete the Follow-Up SAP Evaluation 

After completing the recommendation, you return to the SAP for a follow-up evaluation. The SAP determines whether you have successfully complied with the recommendation and whether you are eligible to proceed to the next stage of the Return-to-Duty process.

Step 4: Complete the Return-to-Duty Requirements 

After the SAP determines that you have successfully complied with the recommendation, you may proceed to the next stage of the Return-to-Duty process. The required Return-to-Duty drug and/or alcohol test must be completed in accordance with the applicable DOT regulations before you can resume safety-sensitive duties.

Step 5: Clearinghouse Reporting & Follow-Up Testing

For CDL drivers subject to FMCSA regulations, required information is reported through the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse as the driver progresses through the Return-to-Duty process.

After returning to safety-sensitive duties, the employee is also subject to the SAP's follow-up testing plan. DOT regulations require at least six unannounced follow-up tests during the first 12 months, and the SAP may require additional testing for up to five years.
